Interview:
1. You like to mix humor with getting fit; do you think it helped you to use humor to change your attitude to getting fit rather than the tough approach?
Absolutely, and without a doubt! I would not have been able to stick with it this long (100 weeks so far) without having a sense of humor and poking fun at myself. There are so many obstacles out there, externally (like constant food ads on TV) and internally (coping with unhelpful physicians and health related issues) to just name a few. A solid sense of humor is the only way to go! I started out needing to lose 153 lbs, with congestive heart failure, and rheumatoid arthritis (since age 2) - at age 52 it’s a looooong road ahead to get healthy, but I’m going to enjoy it and laugh along the way as much possible
2. I know many people including Myself who would benefit from your blog. Do you have any plans on marketing your blog more?
I would love to broaden my readership for the blog, but I have no clue how. I just post daily as much as possible and hope folks find me. I accept all forms of free advertising by the way (you can quote me on that! LOL).
3. What was it that inspired you to start your Diet Pulpit blog?
May 2006 I first started blogging with a friend on a different blog as a way for her and I to get motivated together to lose weight. She didn’t stick with it (way too much stress in her life), and most of the time we ended up just posting the negative stuff a lot or blogged about our daily life, so I it wasn’t helping me get healthy or motivated, and after awhile it wasn’t much fun either - I was bored, so readers (the few we had) must be bored too. After about a year, I woke up one morning and said you know what, the only way I’m going to stick with this healthy lifestyle plan is if I’m as fanatical about it as one of those TV evangelists. I got this imagine of the “diet pulpit” and I decided to create a new blog on my own and on April 1, 2007 the Diet Pulpit was born - April Fool’s Day (in honor of my motto “Don’t be a fool, eat for fuel”). From there the whole thing just sort of mushroomed with ideas.
But ask my friends and family, that’s how my brain works - I get an idea and it’s usually huge and I get totally obsessed with it. LOL My problem is I have too many ideas and not enough time!
4. Who keeps you motivated to keep up with your diet and blogging?
My daugher is my number one motivation to get healthy and stick with a healthy diet. I want to be around a very long time for her; my goal is to live to at least 100! My readers are the number one reason that keeps me motivated to blog. I really enjoy when someone leaves a comment, especially if I’m made someone smile, or helped someone in some small way, or they found something I posted about useful. It makes my day!
5. Are there any bloggers that you read everyday?
Not every day, there just aren’t enough hours in the day, since I work full time, have a family and maintain a few blogs (not just the Diet Pulpit). But to name just a few that I do read regularly - Fabulously Jinxed, That Grrl, Pandora’s Casket, Evil Woobie, SexyAdsBlog, Gina’s Weight Watchers Recipes, and Kudos for Balanced Fitness & Lifestyle. One of the reasons I started the blog Entrecard Favorites, is because I found so many great blogs while dropping I needed a way to keep track of them all so I could go back again.
6. How much has Entrecard helped in your blogging and readership?
I don’t have any hard stats (I wouldn’t know how to get them or how to interrupt them if I did), but I know I have had a lot more visits and a lot more comments since joining Entrecard. Visiting so many blogs on a daily basis has also helped me to learn a lot because I can see what works and doesn’t work as far as layouts, etc. The forum is a great resource too; everyone is so nice and helpful. I have read blogs in categories I would probably have never have visited or even found without “dropping” in on them because of Entrecard and I’ve found a lot of great resources for writing better, blogging better, etc. Entrecard has really broadened my blogging experience and enhanced my enjoyment. I really feel like I’m connected to an active and thriving blogging community now, which is something that just didn’t happen before with any other online type social network that I had signed up.
7. How much has Entrecard changed your blogging ways?
I’m even more determined to post quality and less fluff and filler then I was before, because I know I have more readers and they visit often (if not daily) to drop. Of course, it isn’t always possible, but I do my best.
8. How would you best describe your blog?
It is the Blog with fattitude! Hallelujah! It is a blog that focuses on a healthy lifestyle not just weight issues, with several spoons full of useful information and a cup full of personal tidbits about my life, all served with a dollop of humor and a side order of fire and brimstone and it is calorie free!
9. What do your family and friends think about you blogging?
They think I’m a little crazy, but they don’t mind, they love me any way. They know I’ll probably blog about just about everything (but never anything that would embarrass them!), and they do tease me a bit. Which is why the last photo of my daughter I posted at Easter had the little thought balloon that said, “I bet mom is going to blog about this.”
10. If you could have one wish what would it be (Blogging related)
Just one wish - gee that’s tough — I would wish for MORE TIME TO BLOG, but I don’t want to waste my wish. *thinks hard* I’ve got it! rubs the magic genie blog lamp I wish that I and my blog could be on the Oprah show, and it would be so popular I could earn enough money from it to quit my cubicle job and have enough time to blog full time as much as I wanted to.
