Is Google all we need?

I have always been a fanboy of Google and most things they create. I was just looking at my laptop and what I use it for when I realised it is mostly Google made programs that I use the most.

What scares me most is that I have always hated that Google does own the internet… I guess George Orwell was right “You will one day love Big Brother” and that is very true. I have grown to want to get my Blogs PR back to PR4 or above. I now feel good if one of my articles is on the Google search first page, and I am now dependent on what Google offers me for free.

If Google left the internet and shut everything down I really do not know what I would do…. Google is the internet for me! They are the building blocks for everything that the Internet is today… They hold info on everyone who uses the it… Close to every page is Indexed and copied by Google, most of my personal data is entrusted to Google… But I do not mind. Why don’t I mind? I have no idea! maybe it is because they offer everything for free… Or maybe it is just me excepting that they are the Internets version of God, and they can strike down on me and my Blog with a swift click of a mouse.

Anyway, here are a list of most of the Google owned things that rule my internet life:

  • Search - I have no reason to use anything else but Google for this! And with the new Google interface that is coming out I am sure ill be even more hooked.
  • Gmail - Google changed e-mailing for me. Before Gmail I used Hotmail and got reallt sick of it. I never checked my email everyday and was sick of having to log in so i never lost my emails. Now I use Google and with the reinvention of email it is so easy and quick! I love the way the inbox works and all the new features that keep being added. Gmail is the most used thing on my laptop!
  • Google Docs - I no longer use MS Office as it costs way to much and is a pain in the ass! Now I can write anywhere in the world and have all my files to work on at anytime. I can share my work with other people and keep it safe and secure…. Did I mention it is also free?
  • Google Talk (Gtalk) - I hate MSNM because of how many features it has! I hate all the images that are replaced by text… It just drives me crazy! So I found Gtalk and am inlove! It is so simple, has a web interface that does everything you need! you can now log into AIM and soon more will be added. I use Pidgin as my chat client as I can log into more accounts… But the web version is still amazing!
  • Google Desktop - This is a new tool for me :) It gives you 1000s of widgets that you can stick on your desktop. They can range from mostly ANYTHING you can think off! Check it out and see what you can find!
  • YouTube - This is one of the biggest websites in the world! When you think of online video you think of YouTube!
  • News Alerts - I use google news Alerts to find out about subjects I am interested in. I get emails sent to me when one of my interests hit the news or are talked about on blogs. It helps me to keep up-to-date with most things :) I would have missed a lot if it was not for these cool alerts :)
  • Google Calander - I do not use this as much as I should… But it is the only calander I have ever used! I love how it updates me to my mobil phone and email :) It also has some cool sharing features and updates my Gtalk if I am busy with one of the subjects I put into it.
  • Google Reader - The future of the internet is in RSS! it is News on demand and your own personal interests! Google reader is the best RSS reader I have used. I love how it works and how fast it is!!! It is one of the gems of Google.
  • Blog Search - I use this all the time! It is great for finding good blogging subjects and also good for new reads that will not have made it to Google search yet.
  • Google News - I love how you can make custom news spaces for YOUR news! It is perfect for everything I need to find out what is going on in the world!

The only things that I think could make Google better is if they owned a site like Digg! Digg and Entrecard are the only other websites I use on a daily basis now.

And they KEY selling pont for all this is? One login gets you all of this for free!

Yes I agree. At first it bothered me that Google was going to be a monoply but now I guess I am just used to it. And as tyrants go, Google is pretty nice about it. :)

  2. Lee Doyle Says:

Very true. I guess you just learn to bow down to Google… if you dont they will just force you in the end.

  3. RogerDJ Says:

I respectfully disagree. A”Tyrant” should never be trusted or bowed down to. Let the chips fall where they may ! Isn’t that what you want from your Prime Minister ?
