Why Ubuntu 8.10 is so Important

Written by Lee Doyle on November 1, 2008 – 7:25 pm

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is the new release of the ever popular Operating system. Intrepid Ibex looks to be the best yet and offers some great new features that I think is sending it in the right direction to gaining new users.

Microsoft have been releasing new BETA builds of Windows 7 in hopes of showing customers it is listening to the unhappy users of its outcast child called Vista. But while Microsoft are happily building new versions we see Ubuntu sending out new updates of their 8.x editions at rapid rates.

Linux operating systems have always had a Stigma about them and it has put many people of using them. A lot of loyal Microsoft users think they are very hard to use, and they just do not want to get used to something new. Ubuntu is a sort of in-between operating system now, it is built using v2.6.27 of the Linux Kernel and Gnome 2.24 as a Desktop… This may confuse people even more as different desktops and all the other options Linux has to offer just sends the loyal MS users minds spinning… But it should on the other hand give them more reason to switch… It offers more options and costs exactly $0 or for us Brits £0.00p.

Ubuntu even offer a FREE CD which they will send you for FREE. This CD has what is called a LiveCD which lets you boot Ubuntu without having to install anything. If you decide you like it you can install it next to your Microsoft Windows without deleting anything. This will give you a good chance in testing it at full speed and may give some people a nice toy to play around with.

To get your Ubuntu free CD sent to you look down this page for the link. For me it took about 1 week as I think it was sent from the US. You can also download Ubuntu for FREE and burn it onto a CD. As Ubuntu is Open Source you have nothing to worry about as you are breaking no laws in downloading this full operating system (Like you would with WIndows) it has no CD Keys or anything… and Updates are 100% free forever.

Ubuntu comes in a whole range of packages. You have the normal Ubuntu version which will work on all modern computers (i386), you then have the Ubuntu 64bit version which will work on computers with a 64bit processor (Like AMD64). Both of these Ubuntu versions also come in “Alternate” versions which gets rid of the LiveCD option. This Ubuntu version is great for people who know that they wish to install Ubuntu and want to get rid of booting the LiveCD to install it. instead of the LiveCD you have a text based installation which runs in DOS, this makes things much quicker and us very very easy to use.

I predict that Ubuntu and other Linux based operating systems will grow and by the year 2015 will hold a strong userbase. All Ubuntu needs is a new advertising campaign. If it had the chance to show normal Users how easy it was to use I am sure people will switch with ease… It would also be great for small buisnesses which just do not want to pay the crazy prices Microsoft ask for their system.

This being said, i dont  think Ubuntu just needs the fact it is free being its key point. If it focused to much on this people would see it as a cheap system and not see its other features.

Please makes sure you check out Ubuntu and see what your missing!

Could YOU change the world for the better?

Written by Lee Doyle on October 9, 2008 – 7:25 pm

I was just on the phone with a good friend who has done some major things to change the way some people think. He has never changed the world but he has paved the way for hundreds of people to do so.

While I was talking to him I really had one of them moments where you realise that everyone who has changed the world was human and a person just like me or you.

We always sit down complaining about goverments or how things never change… But very few of us really do anything about it. We are all quite happy with just complaining while we let these things happen around us.

Many of us just think of things that are only in their own country and forget that we are all living in the same world and everything does effect us somewhere down the road.
(Take the USA arming the Taliban in the 80s and now they are at war fighting their own weapons)

We are all only just wakening up to fuel prices and weather changes… but they have been talked about for many many years. It is only when something is forced in your face when people really listen… The rest of the time things we see on the news or papers are just like the movies we see… As they are not effecting us or our wallets they just are not real.

When I first saw the person I was talking to I saw him on the news. I just shrugged off what he was saying as it was not effecting me right then… I never knew what he was going through and I never really cared… But if i did, and I did something then before it did effect me then maybe things would now be different? Well if everyone who saw this person on TV stood up and did something BEFORE it effected them or people they knew… well laws would change and millions of people would be happy now.

So back to my question.

Do you think YOU could change the world? Sometimes it is only very small changes that in the end make huge differences… Maybe some of the biggest world changing things we do not even know about… Because maybe they did change the world but as we never felt the bad things they changed maybe we just do not know.

While talking to guy (I cant mention his name but I am sure some of you know who he is) I really did feel that I was talking to someone who has effected peoples lives all over the world… I talk to people every day from around the world who are now following in his footsteps, and just one of these people could change laws in their own country thanks to this ONE person.

YOU could change the world… Its just do you have the guts?
