Google Chrome BETA Review

Unlike most of you I never even knew Google was working on a browser… well I thought they would but not until they maybe had their own OS like Goobuntu or something.

Anyway, this ia short review of the new browser.

First of all I just want to say how sexy it looks! I will not be switching from firefox but I sure will use the new Shortcut Application feature! This is the gold dust me for as I use most of Googles tools like Gmail and their Reader. 

For people who are not sure what this is ill let you know. have you ever liked a tool online that you thought would be a cool thing to use as a program but thought “Ill have to boot up my browser and then I have all the extra userbars that take up all the space” well now you dont have to worry! Just create a shortcut and Google Crome opens the tool/webpage up like a normal windows (Your OS) application! It even gives you a cool Icon if the webpage uses a ico file.

I love it and now have Gmail, Reader, Calender, Google Docs shortcuts on my desktop which load up full screen I love it.

It also maximises space! No longer do you have the top bar taking up wasted space. You now use that wasted space with the tabs like in Firefox. It also just has a URL bar and the bare minimum buttons needed for a good browsing experience. 

It does lack plugins and sadly has now ad-blocker so if you are used to not seeing adverts with Adblock plus you will miss it here.

Fore a BETA program it really is a smack in the face to IE and FF, but it does lack a lot of features… But then again it might not be a bad thing.

Google has always been about Basic clean design. no big features that slow things down… And Chrome is super fast! It has Google Gears built in which I tested and it works great. It also loads pages in half the time Firefox 3 does… and about 1 month faster than Internet Explorer does.

Without a doubt it will be sending shivers down FireFoxes spine. If they do implement a plugin system and can fix the bugs (It is beta) then I may switch and stop using Firefox… Which I never ever thought id say!

Fingers crossed this does put a nail in Internet Explorers coffin and will one day show the people who think IR is the Internet how stupid they are.

Ubuntu Take 2

I have decided to try to keep myself busy and give Ubuntu 8.4.1 LTS (64bit) a try. I have used Ubuntu before and really enjoyed using it… but back then I was using the XFCE version (xUbuntu) as I was trying to run some Linux OS’s on low spec systems… To which I found Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux worked best.

I have myself a new Laptop and just ordered a USB 8GB thumb Drive which I hope to run Ubuntu from. This will let me run Windows XP as normal but give Ubuntu a shot at impressing me again.

I think its a cool idea because it will show me how far its moved on since I last used it (xubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake) which should have some big changes now

I think ill write up some guides on how to install onto a thumb drive and have it boot as its own system. if it can be done on Windows XP ill even make a video guide on how to do it.

If it sucks and runs slow ill maybe give Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux a shot and see how they run… Or maybe un a multi boot Thumb drive and have them all run.

The main goal is to get the whole system running and all my hardware setup perfectly. If this can be done then I may switch fully as I like using open source software and love anything that is free and community driven.
